This position starts at $23.16* per hour.  *Hourly rate may vary based on education, experience or qualifications.


This position typically works four days a week, with ten-hour workdays from Monday to Thursday. 
May be subject to emergency call back.

Position Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Technician performs journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, and alteration of City-owned buildings and facilities. This position requires skill in multiple trades including carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, painting, and roofing. Work is performed independently, often under general instructions, and includes estimating materials, selecting appropriate tools, and determining work methods. Assignments are received orally or in writing and are inspected periodically for quality and completion.

Essential Functions

  • • Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and remodeling of buildings and facilities
  • • Install various types of flooring (wood, tile, carpet, linoleum)
  • • Use hand tools and power tools for bench carpentry and general repair
  • • Install and repair pre-hung, slab, wood-framed, and metal doors and windows
  • • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on HVAC systems
  • • Repair roofing materials, flashings, sealants, and install roofing tiles
  • • Repair and maintain locks, door closers, window frames, furniture, and fixtures
  • • Paint interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment
  • • Patch and repair plaster and drywall
  • • Conduct routine electrical repairs including lights, outlets, switches, and fans
  • • Perform minor welding and HVAC system support tasks
  • • Estimate and procure required materials and supplies
  • • Maintain clean and safe work areas and equipment
  • • Coordinate with other staff to ensure work aligns with city standards
  • • Continuously seek improvements in efficiency, work quality, and safety

Education and Experience

  • • High school diploma or GED required
  • • Valid Kansas Driver’s License (CDL preferred)
  • • Minimum three years of experience in building maintenance or construction

Knowledge of:
  • • Construction and maintenance tools and practices
  • • Building systems and facility repair methods
  • • HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry basics
  • • Safety procedures and hazard awareness
  • • Reading blueprints, layouts, and manuals
Ability to:
  • • Solve technical problems independently
  • • Estimate and track materials for maintenance work
  • • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • • Prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently
  • • Perform basic math and distance measurement

  • • Concentrate for long periods and recall complex information
  • • Solve problems and make decisions independently
Average ability to:
  • • Use all five senses, including color differentiation
  • • Lift and maneuver 80-pound tools and materials
  • • Climb, balance, kneel, and work in tight or below-grade areas
  • • Use hand tools and perform repetitive motions
  • • Endure physically demanding tasks and environmental exposures

Work Environment

  • • Outdoor weather and temperature extremes
  • • Loud noises, dust, fumes, and chemicals
  • • Cramped, below-grade, or elevated work areas
  • • Overtime, on-call, and extended work hours
